Book Club 8-)
I thought this would be a quaint idea, as not all the forum's members are children/teenagers (I'm an exception )
Basically, just a thread to talk about books you've read, to reccomend... or I suppose we could even get a 'swap shop' going...
Any volunteers to post first?

well its set in the 1800's. set around a young woman called margaret, her, her father and mother lived in the countryside after he quits working for the church against the wishes of his wife and daughter he moves them to an industry town. here the rich factory owner mr thornton falls for her and then its sort of a love story between them too.

it was made a few years ago as a tv show. thats probally a better idea of the story than i can explain:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q40sVEDkAXA
it stars Daniela Denby-Ashe (My Family) as Margaret and Richard Armitage (Gisborne from Robin Hood) as Mr Thornton

Aw wow!
I've never read that either...
I've just finished PS I Love You - it's one of the best books I've ever read!
I'm also rather partial to a child abuse story [Child Called It, A Piece Of Cake, anything by Torey Hayden] I cry every time..

Even I love Harry Potter, me and my black heart. I love sci-fi. I've just finished re-reading "Timeline" by Michael Crichton. It's about quantum physics being used to time travel to the Middle Ages. As a history student, it's my favourite period in time (apart from when I will be blissfully married to John Barrowman who will then no longer be gay).
It's worth reading even if you don't get the science bits. My daughter just skipped over the quantum physics because it's not that pivotal to the story. The time machines work, end of story. You don't need to know how.
Also, "The Time Travellers' Wife" is a work of genius, soon to be a film apparently (which I'm dreading), but deffo for older readers.
Shannon, check out http://www.bookcrossing.com/mybookshelf/demonllama/referral

has anyone read 'junk' by melvin burgess? the best book ive read (leaving aside harry potter) by far! its about heroin and shizzle...i bet thats sold it to u all! lol if anyone wants a read il happily volunteer to be the first sender.
russell brand's my booky wook is amazing too, altho u need a strong grasp of the english language to understand it (and a strong stomach at times!) now reading john barrowmans autobiography, which is very insightful.

Thanks.
A book which I really enjoyed, although it made me cry was 'Life on the Refrigerator Door' by Alice Kuipers.
I really need to read 'PS - I love you' as a lot of people have told me it's really good.
I've got £30 of book tokens to spend so any ideas for good books would be really appreciated.
Re: Book Club 8-)
my sister said p.s. i love you was poor, good concept, but repetitive...not my cup of tea so i havnt read it, im just passing on the only comment ive had on the subject!
autobiographys are the best reads, gene wilder's is worth a read...tim burton's meloncholy death of the oyster boy is downright odd but pure genius...i probably dont generally read ur kind of book tho (harry potter excluded!)

I know people who refuse to read Harry Potter on religious grounds, even though they're the same religion as me.

I really don't understand why people won't read it on religious grounds.
What are these religious grounds?!?

Re: Book Club 8-)
No, it's because in the bible it says "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live" ie all witches should be killed.
BUTBUTBUTBUT it was written over two thousand years ago and so does NOT mean witches in the modern magical sense. It meant the type of woman who manipulated people and was anti-religion, evil, devilish etc.

Re: Book Club 8-)
Oh ok... I never really thought of that.
Excpet JK says that Harry didn't really die.
And Harry Potter's entirely fictional. It's not like she's trying to say that it's true or anything!!
But people are entitled to their own beliefs, I suppose.
